Recipe of INTRIGUE

Shalom!

I hope the Easter long weekend brought you relaxation, full bellies and leisure.

Speaking of leisure.....

I decided to do something most of us busy bees rarely do...relax. I bought a movie a few weeks ago called 'UNBOWED'. I stumbled on to the story by accident and caught a few teaser scenes on YouTube , which piqued my curiosity to the tallest peak of a  mountain. I don't want to give away the entire story, but here is the long and short of it:

The movie stars Jay Tavare (Waka Mani) and Tembi Locke (Cleola). Cleola is a student at Beckwourth College (All Black College in the 1890s). She has just become engaged to a prominent student of the school, Richard (Chuma Hunter-Gault), and all the students are about to prepare for the 25th Anniversary Celebration. In the midst of the preparation, three captured Lakota warriors are ushered (against their will, of course) to Beckwourth. Enter Waka Mani, the ruggedly handsome yet defiant chief Lakota warrior who makes eye contact with Cleola... Well, I won't give away the rest of the story. I watched it and I loved it from beginning to end!

The reason why I am raving about this story/movie is because the pairing of the characters is like a fine diamond...RARE!! Interracial relationships are gaining more public attention, however they are not entirely embraced and I think they will remain stigmatized to a certain degree. A Black woman and a Native American man is not common, but history dictates it exists.

The point that I'm trying to make is people are not colour blind, but love most certainly is. Relationships on a whole are complicated, and two people from different races/cultures that are involved have even more hurdles to jump over. To me, it just makes love and the relationship more satiable and exciting. I really wish I followed this mantra a few years ago...but that is another story.

The movie is 15 years old (1998), but the premise of prejudice and attempting to dispel stereotypes is something we all, at some point in our sacred lives have encountered, including yours truly.

I hope you all get the chance to watch this movie. Check out the links below for further information:
